Outdoor Activities
Les Roches is well situated for outdoor activities (such as walking, bike riding, horse riding, tennis and swimming) as we are located among many pretty rural villages and on the edge of the Morvan National Park (France’s largest national park).
Walking
Many of our guests go for long walks from our village of Mont-Saint-Jean given the beautiful scenery. There are a few trails that we can recommend given your desired length of walk.
At Saint-Brisson, in the Morvan National Park, there is a park open for visitors including a Botanical Garden (the garden gets its inspiration from gardens for castles and monasteries during the Middle Ages), a Fruit Orchard (specialising in the local old fruit varieties), an Educational Trail (13 information boards along the trail show visitors the vast variety of landscape and wildlife in the area), The Resistance Museum (this museum highlights the events during the German Occupation of the area during the war), and a marked walking trail. Saint-Brisson is about a 30 minute drive from Les Roches.
Bike Riding
Mont-Saint-Jean is a great starting point for a bike ride as there are many pretty little hamlets and small rural villages in the area. The setting is very picturesque and the small roads are ideal as there is not much traffic. We can suggest some routes given the length of your desired bike ride. For a more leisurely bike ride, we recommend riding on the canal (a good place to start is at Vandenesse-en-Auxois, which is about a 30 minute drive from Les Roches).
The Morvan National Park offer nature lovers over 3 400 km of marked trails for mountain biking. The following are some of the nearby departure points for the trails: Saulieu and Saint-Brisson (the local tourist offices in those towns can provide details on the trails).
If you are not planning on bringing your own bike on your holiday, we have Trek Mountain bikes for hire (€15 per bike per day).
Horse Riding
There is an equestrian centre in Thoisy-le-Désert (about a 20 minute drive from Les Roches) called Poney-Club de L’Auxois where they offer horse riding. For information, please call +33 (0)3 80 90 88 41.
Tennis
There is a tennis court in our village that is open for our guest's use.
Swimming
There are a few lakes in the area where you can swim or simply soak up the sun during the summer. The two lakes that we recommend are Lac de Chamboux (about a 25 minute drive from Les Roches) and Lac des Settons (about a 50 minute drive from Les Roches). Both are in the Morvan National Park.
